Nargisi Kofta: Egg and Lamb Curry Recipe

Last Updated on June 9, 2019 by hungryoungwoman

So, I’ve decided that I’m going to post a recipe of a chosen flavor on the first Saturday of every month. The flavor of this month happens to be…Eggs!

The recipe I’m posting today is an Indian dish. I first saw this on It’s All About Food (Check out her blog!) It is called Nargisi Kofta (egg meatballs with gravy)

This is my first attempt at the dish and I was very happy with it. The kofta was perfect with a layer that wasn’t too thick nor too thin. The gravy complemented them really well. Also, the koftas could be eaten separately. All in all, a wonderful dish!

How to Make Nargisi Kofta:

Ingredients:

Kofta

  1. 6 Eggs (4 of them to be boiled)
  2. 1 small onion (chopped)
  3. 500 gms mutton mince ( you can use chicken too)
  4. 1 tsp chili pepper powder
  5. 1 tsp garam masala powder
  6. 1 garlic clove (crushed)
  7. 2 tsp rice flour
  8. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  9. Salt to taste
  10. Oil for frying

Gravy

  1. 1 large onion (finely chopped)
  2. 1 large tomato (chopped)
  3. 1 tsp oil
  4. 1 tsp cumin seeds
  5. 1 tsp ginger garlic paste
  6. 1 tsp coriander powder
  7. 1/2 cup yogurt
  8. 1 cup water
  9. 1 tsp turmeric powder
  10. 1 tsp garam masala powder
  11. 2 tsp chili pepper powder (1 tsp if you do not prefer spicy food)
  12. Coriander to garnish

Method:

Kofta

  • First, boil 4 eggs in hot boiling water. After done, transfer to cold water and peel them.

  • Next, add the mutton mince, one egg, chopped onion, garam masala powder, chili pepper powder, turmeric powder, crushed garlic and salt to a bowl.
  • Divide the mixture into 4 even portions. With a little oil spread on your palm, take one portion and flatten the mixture. Place one boiled egg inside, and wrap the mixture around the egg to form an even coating. Remember to not make the coating too thick. Also, make sure that the egg cannot be seen beneath the mixture, try to conceal it well.
  • Next, put some rice flour on a plate. This can be up to 2 tsp, more can be added later.
  • Heat the oil in a pan for deep-frying.
  • Beat an egg with water in a bowl and keep aside.
  • Take the mince coated egg and dust with the rice flour. Make sure to cover all the sides of the egg. Then, dip it into the bowl of egg and water and put the egg (Kofta) for frying.
  • Cook the kofta till golden brown. Make sure to turn it while cooking to ensure the same color overall.

Gravy

  • Add oil in a pan, and add cumin seeds once the oil is hot. Add ginger garlic paste once the cumin seeds splutter.
  • Add chopped onion and cook for 2 minutes. Then, add garam masala, chili pepper powder, turmeric powder, coriander powder, salt, and chopped tomato.

  • Cook for about 5 mins, and then add half a cup of yogurt and a cup of water. Let the mixture cook for about 5 mins and then add koftas and further cook for about 2 mins.

  • The mixture should look something like this.
  • Finally, add coriander to garnish.

Tip: Since there was some leftover mixture of the kofta, I decided to make them into little balls and fry them. These can be eaten on their own and taste quite good.

Note: Koftas must be added only when you are going to serve the dish.

Happy cooking 🙂 xx
