When Gordon Ramsay announced the opening of his new restaurant, Bread Street Kitchen (BSK), last year, many of us who have been watching the Chef on our television sets from childhood, rejoiced. Gordon, who is popular for starring in Hell’s Kitchen and Masterchef is also the owner of BSK in London.
The venture here is situated in Atlantis, The Palm which needs no introduction to anyone living in the U.A.E. The restaurant hosted full tables with most of the crowd from The West, we could also spot a couple of tables with Arabs seated. Not bad for a weekday!
BSK is what it says on paper, a casual all-day dining which is portrayed in its wooden interiors and open space which stimulates a comfortable atmosphere which we find easy to settle in. But, the prices tell another story. Is BSK really what it says it is? And, do the prices do justice to the food served?
The menu is short and sweet, with a variety of dishes we are familiar with. The Beef Wellington is a must order, any Gordon Ramsay fan will tell you that. Which is why we ask for exactly that, unfortunately, we are told that will take 60 mins to be served which was outrageous! (This was mainly due to the well-done meat we preferred. A medium-done would take 40.) The Wellington Wednesday offer saves us. Serving a smaller portion of the former dish with a Tuna Tartare [AED 70], Freekeh Salad [AED 65], and Tamarind Chicken Wings [AED 55] for starters with a dessert plate to end with.
While I’m not a fan of tuna or a tartare, A seemed to like having it with the wonton crisps it came with. My choice was the salad for its fresh ingredients and we jointly agree that the chicken wings were a beautiful marriage of sweet and sour.
Our main courses arrive shortly, brought to us by Alistair, our server for the day. The Beef Wellington was as expected, stunning. A massive portion though, with sides of truffle mash and spiced carrots housed in Yorkshire pudding. The beef was moist and the pastry flaky, with pickled walnut and bone marrow sauce complementing it wonderfully. Rightly named the Signature Dish! The suggested Wagyu Beef Burger [AED 95] arrives next, arranged on a rather large plate leaving almost no place for our plates on the table. A drawback of paying more attention to quantity than quality.
Sadly, we resort to eating on the dish plates served while handing back ours to the server.
A says he’s had better Wagyu Burgers as he felt the meat was “too minced” and the former dish stood as a clear winner. Nevertheless, if you ignore the falling patty, the burger is good enough. (Check out our favorite burgers here.)
It would be almost unforgivable to not mention our side which comes for a whopping AED 60. Portion size is huge again which leaves us thinking who would order this as a side. The Lobster Mac n Cheese is loaded with carbs but creamy and rich. The lobster is a good touch and I wouldn’t mind ordering this again. (probably as the main course, though…)
Alistair recommends not leaving without desserts, he promptly prepares a platter that consists of BSK’s favorite sweets. The Banana Sticky Toffee pudding immediately hits the spot with the clotted cream, a nice contrast to its sweet cake. Chocolate parfait and the Eton Mess score a close second. Both opposites, but fantastic nonetheless. [AED 45 each]
If I’m going back: The prices seem a little steep for a casual dinner so the offers are a great excuse to visit. Wellington Wednesdays cost AED 300 for a night that will leave your tummy full and your pockets too. Although, if you’re visiting with a group, the Beef Wellington which comes for AED 545 can be shared and split. 😉
With great food, massive portions, friendly service, (can get a little slow at times) and vibrant ambiance, Bread Street Kitchen has everything going for it, if the Celeb Chef wasn’t enough 😉
